How to cut the power take-off shaft into proper size
You can cut the PTO shaft to prevent it from touching the bottom, so that there will be no conflict between the tractor and the gearbox. Follow the following five steps to complete this process.
1. Find part number
The first step in cutting the PTO shaft to adjust the size is to know the part number of the specification provided. Look at the label on the shaft and find yours. An example part number is 14006127.
In this example, 1400 is the name of the complete shaft. Six means it is a Bondy LD axis. One is the serial number, and 27 is the inch measurement from one tip of the shaft to the other.
2. Connect the parts of the shaft to the tractor and gearbox
To measure the cutting shaft, remove it, hang one tube and shield on the tractor, and connect the other to the gearbox. Make sure that both parts are straight in order to obtain the most accurate measurement.
3. Measure the distance between parts
Next, measure the shortest distance between the tractor and the gearbox. Make sure to measure along a straight line to obtain an accurate reading. This measurement is the maximum compression length of the PTO shaft that the tractor can operate.
4. Determine how much to cut
Using the optimal length of the PTO shaft obtained in step 3, calculate how many shafts need to be cut to work effectively. Take the measured value given in the last few digits of the part number and subtract the maximum allowable length from it. This calculation will provide you with the amount of cutting you need to match the shaft with the operation of the tractor. For example, if the maximum compression length of the tractor shaft is 23 inches, and you have a 27 inch shaft, you need to remove 4 inches to work properly.
5. Cut the shaft and shield to the correct length
The last step is to cut the shaft to the correct length. Separate the shaft so that the outer shield and the inner tube can be accessed. You can cut materials with a hacksaw or reciprocating saw.
If there are two tubes of equal length in the shaft, the two tubes and the two shields need to be cut to the appropriate length. If the tubes are not equal, only the longer part and shield can be shortened. Once you put your shaft back together, it should be right to shorten the length around it.
